Tomic gets first win on the board
Bernard Tomic won his second round robin match today against Dane Propoggia from NSW, who retired in the third set with the scoreline 6-7 6-4 3-0 in Tomic’s favour.
Yesterday, Tomic – the reigning Australian Open junior champion – was defeated in three sets by experienced South Australian Colin Ebelthite.
Tomic said he was relieved to get past Propoggia and register his first win for the tournament.
“Dane played really good, I think he played better than me today and I haven’t been feeling well all night after my long match yesterday,” he said.
“It was lucky he pulled out because I didn’t have any strength left.”
“I couldn’t break him, he was serving well, he was doing the right things and my movement I couldn’t get out on the returns and that’s what I needed but I’m just happy I got through and I can play tomorrow and have a good match.”
Bernard’s next opponent is Victorian Joe Sirianni, who won the men’s wildcard play-off last year but was strugging to win today’s second round encounter against Ebelthite.
