Bernard has been nominated in the Young Performer of the Year category in the 2008 Sports Performer Awards.

The annual Sports Performer Awards are presented by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald newspapers in conjunction with Colonial First State.

These Awards aim to be one of the most prestigious prizes in Australian Sport – recognising the very best Performers from the previous 12 months.

Unlike other major Awards, the Sports Performer of the Year Awards are voted for by Australia’s passionate sporting public

The winner will be voted on by the public and announced at the Sports Performer of the Year Awards on Wednesday 26 November, 2008.

Bernard is up against swimmers Kylie Palmer and Emily Seebohm, cricketer Elyse Perry, surfer Tyler Wright and diver Melissa Wu.

This year Tomic won the Australian Open Boys’ Singles Championships and reached the semifinals of the boys singles at Wimbledon.

He is currently placed 3rd in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Rankings.

At just 15, Tomic was also chosen in the Optus Australian Davis Cup squad to tackle Chile but narrowly missed selection to play.
