Strong start in juniors
Bernard Tomic has won his first round match against Britain’s George Morgan in the Wimbledon Boys’ Junior Championships on Saturday.
Tomic was was suffering a virus leading into the match but mustered enough energy to register a 7-6 6-2 victory at the All England Club.
“I’ve been checked out by the doctors and I am lucky I have two days off now,” Tomic said after the match.
“I just don’t have any energy, I can’t focus and I’ve got a little bit of a headache. Thank God I’m not playing tomorrow or the next day. Hopefully I’ll be ok.”
The Australian No.3 seed reached the semifinals last year and is intent on going further this time around.
“I came so close last year, missed my chance,” he said.
“It’s big, because one year of waiting after reaching the semifinal, it would be great if I could win and put grand slam No 2 on there. Hopefully I can do it but I’ve got four, five matches to go.
Tomic narrowly missed out on a place in the main draw at Wimbledon, losing in the final round of qualifying against Eduoard Roger-Vasselin.
