Bernard Tomic has beaten compatriot Joe Sirianni in straight sets to move into the second round of the Maccabi Men’s Challenger in East Bentleigh.
The 16 year old, who received a wildcard into the tournament, turned in an impressive performance to overhaul the fifth seed 6-4 6-2.
Tomic will now play fellow wildcard recipient Matt Reid, who beat Toshihide Matsui 6-2 6-4, in a much anticipated second round match-up on Thursday.
In the last singles match on Tuesday, top seed Go Soeda survived a scare against Aussie Andrew Coelho.
Coelho looked the goods after taking the first set 6-4 but Soeda hit back to take the second in a tiebreak 7-6(1) before running away to win the third 6-3.
In second round singles action on Wednesday, the in-form Brydan Klein takes on Greg Jones while Colin Ebelthite plays Ti Chen of Taipei.
