Tomic lines up for Play-off
Bernard Tomic will once again be in the spotlight next week as he competes for a coveted Australian Open wildcard.
Tomic reached the second round of the Australian Open this year, made a successful Davis Cup debut in March and qualified for Wimbledon.
After turning 18 in October, Tomic will be keen to secure a spot in the main draw of the Australian Open for the third time.
Other players confirmed for the Play-off include Australia’s No.2 and Davis Cup stalwart Peter Luczak (Vic) and 2010’s big improvers, Matt Ebden (WA), Marinko Matosevic (Vic) and John Millman of Queensland. Big serving Sam Groth (Vic) is in form, winning the WM Loud Bendigo International last week.
Tennis Australia’s Director of Tennis Craig Tiley anticipated this year’s Australian Open Play-off could be one of the toughest yet.
“With players such as Dokic, Luczak and Molik set to take on some of the future stars of Australian tennis, this year’s play-off promises to be one of the best.
“Our junior players have shown a strong improvement and with a place in next year’s Australian Open up for grabs, they will be looking to prove that they are ready to compete on the international stage.
This year the men’s event at the play-off will be a knockout tournament, while the women’s draw will compete in a round robin format before moving into a knockout phase from the quarterfinals onwards.
The last man and woman standing will receive a wildcard into the Grand Slam tournament in January.
