Tomic takes out the top seed
Bernard Tomic has upset Turkish top seed Marsel Ilhan in three sets to advance to the second round of the US Open Qualifying event today.
The Queensland teenager registered a stunning 6-0 2-6 6-3 victory over the world No.108, who is 117 places higher in the rankings than Tomic.
He needs to win two more qualifying matches to make the main draw for the final grand slam of the year.
Tomic will play Israeli Noam Okun in the second round on Friday.
Okun, 32, is a veteran of the ATP Tour and has previously been ranked as high as No.95 in the world but is currently ranked No.250.
