He played practice sets with teammates Peter Luczak, Carsten Ball and Paul Hanley on Monday and Tuesday ahead of the official draw on Thursday, which will be held at Melbourne Zoo.
With Davis Cup stalwart Lleyton Hewitt out of the team after undergoing hip surgery in January and tall Melburnian Chris Guccione still sidelined by the achilles injury that kept him out of the Australian Open, Davis Cup captain Fitzgerald says Tomic is a strong chance to make his debut for the national team.
“Bernard’s well and truly in the mix here. He’s been practising well, he’s in good form, he’s happy, but so are the other boys,” said Fitzgerald.
Davis Cup great Neale Fraser today added his name to the list of people who believe that Tomic has what it takes to be a great player.
“He showed [at the Australian Open] that he’s got the ability to go all the way, it’s just a matter of whether he applies himself and whether he knuckles down and uses the talents that he’s got to the best of his advantage,” said Fraser.
“I’m sure that he’s a player we’ll all be proud of in the very near future.”
