Tomic goes down fighting
The last Australian singles player at the Medibank International Sydney bowed out when teenager Bernard Tomic lost his rain-interrupted opening round match.
Tomic’s match against Alexandr Dolgopolov had been locked at a set apiece when play was halted on Tuesday night but the Ukrainian quickly wrapped up the match, 6-7(3) 6-1 6-2 on Wednesday morning.
Tomic, who battled through qualifying to get a start in Sydney, does at least have a wildcard for the Australian Open next week.
Dolgopolov went on to play big-serving American Sam Querrey in a second-round match later on Wednesday, upsetting the top seed, 6-4 6-3.
