Tomic one win away
Bernard Tomic is just one victory away from a spot in the main draw at Wimbledon next week.
With Lleyton Hewitt in doubt for the grand slam tournament with a foot problem, any Australian presence on the men’s side at the famed south-west London venue will be valued.
The teenager will play Jean-Rene Lisnard of Monaco in the final round of qualifying on Thursday for a spot in the 128-strong field for the third grand slam of the year, starting Monday.
Australia is assured of at least one additional berth in the men’s singles at Wimbledon with compatriots Marinko Matosevic and Chris Guccione set to battle it out for a spot.
Tomic has shown some encouraging signs on grass in the past fortnight in Nottingham and comfortably accounted for Colombia’s Robert Farah 6-1 6-4 on Tuesday.
Meanwhile in the women’s qualifying competition, Sophie Ferguson progressed to the second round while Casey Dellacqua exited at the opening stage.
