Bernard cruises in Bangkok
Bernard Tomic has ousted ailing 2010 champion Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-0 6-2 in the first round of the Thailand Open.
The 19-year-old Australian dominated the Spaniard, whose movement was hampered by a left foot injury.
After the first set on Tuesday he sought courtside treatment for his right foot.
“It was not easy. He is a good player and won this tournament before,” Tomic said.
“But I’m playing really well. I’m happy that I arrived here early and trained under the heat to get ready. I have to keep my head up.”
Tomic, the eighth seed in the Thai capital, next faces Dudi Sela for a place in the quarterfinals, after the Israeli defeated Swiss wildcard Marco Chiudinelli in straight sets.
