Bernard’s Basel campaign ends

Bernard Tomic has been beaten in the first round of the ATP Swiss Indoors event 6-0 6-2 by Mikhail Youzhny.

The first round loss is the third straight tournament at which the Australian No.1 has been shunted out in his opening match.

Tomic, who just turned 20, has not won a match since the second round in Bangkok one month ago after losing early in Tokyo and Shanghai.

The 48th-ranked Tomic lost serve five times in Tuesday’s rout and managed only one ace as the experienced Russian sixth seed took just 56 minutes to book his ticket into the second round.

There, he will face Tomic’s compatriot Matthew Ebden, who beat Romania’s Victor Hanescu in straight sets.
