It took almost two and a half hours for Bernard Tomic to finally topple veteran Frenchman Julien Benneteau in the Brisbane International on Monday.

But the 19-year-old is used to waiting for a win at the joint WTA-ATP tournament.

Since his first attempt in 2009, Tomic had never made it past the first round.

The eighth seed had to earn victory, needing six match points before eventually overcoming a foe 11 years his senior 6-2 4-6 7-5.

Progress has been rapid lately for the youngest man in the ATP’s top 50.

Last year Tomic was ranked No.208; this year he is Australia’s top ranked player at No.42 after making the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
