Bernard bounced by Chardy in Shanghai
Bernard Tomic has dropped his opening match at the Shanghai Rolex Masters in a straight-sets loss to Jeremy Chardy.
Chardy, ranked 38th, beat the 20-year-old Tomic 7-5 6-2 in one hour and 25 minutes.
Chardy was dominant throughout the encounter, saving all five break points he faces – helped by stellar serving that garnered 11 aces – and converting all three break points he held against the Aussie.
For the second straight week it was a Frenchman bundling Tomic out of an Asian event; last week in the second round of the China Open in Beijing, Tomic fell to Rochard Gasquet.
Chardy will next go on to face 15th seed Nicolas Almagro of Spain.
