Bernard downed in Madrid
Radek Stepanek has ended Bernard Tomic’s campaign at the Mutua Madrid Open, dispatching the young Australian 6-3 6-2 in the first round.
The Czech veteran next faces second seed and defending champion Roger Federer.
Stepanek broke serve on three occasions and saved all three he faced against Tomic to wrap up victory in one hour and four minutes on court Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.
Meanwhile, Tomic’s compatriot Marinko Matosevic experience a day of mixed emotions at the combined ATP/WTA event in the Spanish capital.
After going down to German Tobias Kamke in the final round of qualifying, Matosevic found out he’d made his way into the main draw as a lucky loser after the withdrawal of Thomaz Bellucci, who suffered an abdominal strain.
Matotsevic will face another German, Florian Mayer, in the opening round on Monday.
