Bernard into Stockholm semifinals

STOCKHOLM, AAP – Bernard Tomic has continued his strong late-season form, making the semifinals of the ATP Tour’s Stockholm Open with a three-set win over seventh seed Fernando Verdasco.

The unseeded Tomic beat the Spaniard 0-6 6-4 7-6(6), having previously accounted for third-seeded South African Kevin Anderson.

“I’m very happy with myself,” said the Australian.

“It was a very tough match. I had to turn it around in the second set, so it was very difficult for me.

“If you lose a set 6-0, to be able to turn it around is very important. I think he was playing very good, I had no chance. I kept trying and I had an opportunity when he played one bad game. I took it, which was important for me.”

The 21-year-old next plays second-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov who accounted for American Jack Sock 5-7 6-4 6-3.

Tomic arrived in Stockholm having won just two main draw matches in his previous seven events, since lifting the second ATP World Tour trophy of his career in Bogota.

He withdrew from the US Open in August due to a hip injury.

Meanwhile, top seed Tomas Berdych defeated Marius Copil of Romania 6-2 6-2 to book a spot in the semi-finals against German qualifier Matthias Bachinger, who beat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 4-6 6-1 6-4.
